1965-'68

In 1965, the Association of Junior Leagues was asked to compile a list of Junior League members living in Brevard County.  That list arrived in June and between then and January, 1967, the local Junior League members got together and laid the groundwork for the formation of what is now the Junior League of Central & North Brevard, Inc.  The founding members were:

Mrs. F.E. Baker, Jr. (Liz Clendenning)

Mrs. Vernon Carter ( Mary Rivers)

Mrs. Alexander S. Chamberlain, Jr. (Carol Corwin)

Mrs. Frederick W. Culbertson, II (Emma Jo)

Mrs. Richard Gramling (Sarah)

Mrs. Robert Hare (Mildred Clark)

Mrs. C.H. Henry (Renee)

Mrs. John Hummer (Jane Loud)

Mrs. M.E. Johnston (Barbara Bradsher)

Mrs. James Majercik (Helen Johnston)

Mrs. Hugh H. Nichols (Joan Nanninga)

Mrs. Jennings A. Rehwinkel, Jr. (Ann Langley)

Mrs. Glenn Schleuter (Mary)

Mrs. William W. Schomberg, Jr. (Laura Jane Bettes)

On January 15, 1967, a coffee was held for the purpose of acquainting the League members with the young women of the area.  Approximately 32 prospective members attended and officers were elected and the organization was established as the Indian River Junior Service League.  The first meeting was held on February 10, 1967, at which time the JSL's first president, Mrs. Jennings Rehwinkel, outlined the purpose of the League and the duties and privileges of membership.  The thirteen-week Provisional Training Course began on February 17th and in March of 1967 the name of the organization was changed to the Junior Service League of Cocoa-Titusville.

Toward the end of the training course, the new members began serving on committees.  The Placement Committee began functioning in the Spring, and Placement records for that year showed that 15 members held 23 Board jobs, 10 member held 16 Community Board jobs, 35 members worked on 23 community services and 27 members worked in the In-League Toy Sale.  The total community service hours that first year was 3,240.  At the end of the 1967-68 fiscal year, the JSL membership consisted of 42 members-of which 6 were Actives, 7 were Sustainers and 29 were Provisionals.  The first Ways and Means projects undertaken in 1967-68 were a Christmas Toy Sale and a Brevard County Coloring Book.  Members initiated a Headstart volunteer program, which included transporting students for medical and dental care, cataloging warehoused supplies and giving secretarial assistance during staff vacations.  The Suitcase Museum Committee was established to create portable exhibits to be used in local elementary schools.  The statement of financial activities for the year showed total revenue of $582.20 with expenditure of $202.11.

On October 6, 1967, the Junior Service League of Cocoa-Titusville was incorporated.

1968-'69

Mrs. Eleanor Rose stepped into the presidency at the first annual luncheon meeting; the Junior Service League received the "Woman's Club of the Year" award (30-75 member category) from Gannett Newspapers; the Suitcase Museum Lectures in Brevard County were begun in the public schools, the coloring book "Historic Canaveral" came off the presses and was introduced along with the Suitcase Museums, at the first JSL Press Party.  1968 also saw us co-sponsoring with Gannett Newspapers, the Asolo Theatre Gala, which provided $1,000 for new Mental Health Center.  The second Christmas Toy Sale fattened the Community Trust Account by $249.60 and helped finance the Museum Suitcase exhibits, which won us an award from the Brevard County Historical Commission in January of 1969.

Statistics: 34 Actives, 14 Provisionals and 4 Sustainers.
