JLCNB History
1970 - 1979
1969-'70
With Mrs.
Robert Reed (Norris) at the helm, the JSL sailed into the community service
arena with the opening of the Information and Referral Service, a bureau set up
to fill the long-standing "communication gap" between the public and
the various community service agencies in Brevard.
That year every JSL member "gave hours" at the newly formed
Service, which was part of the Community Services Council, a United Fund Agency.
Other new endeavors were the Halloween Spook House Fundraiser held at
McLarty Park ($600) and the League-sponsored performance of the Preservation
Hall Jazz Band($1,093).
Statistics: 38 Active, 10 Provisionals and 6
Sustainers; Community service hours: 5,253.
1970-'71
During the
year in which Mrs. James Studeman (Susan) was president, the Spook House was
again used as a fundraiser ($675) and another JSL sponsored appearance of
Preservation Hall Jazz Band swelled the Community Trust by $1,400. A Professional group was formed within the membership, a
Board Manual was compiled and 13 Suitcase Museums were shown to over 5,000
children in Central and North Brevard.
Statistics: 45 Actives, 26 Provisionals and 6
Sustainers; Community service
hours: 5,927.
1971-'72
Mrs. Joan
Shepard's presidency saw the Brevard Museum adopted as an on-going project, a
summer youth program at the Museum staffed by Leaguers, the Sustaining
membership opened to 46 new members, the beginning of the Bundles Coffees, Spook
House and Christmas Tree ($588.68) fundraisers and League sponsorship of a
Patrons' Gala for the Brevard County Opera Arts Association ($4,290).

1972-'73
Under Mrs.
James Hinkhouse's (Elsie) leadership, the first Placement Guide was published, a
Day Conference was held (South Brevard JSL attended as guests), the Spook House
Fundraiser was moved to Merritt Square ($1,446.23), the Canaveral Heart
Association and the Brevard Museum each recognized the Service League's
volunteer work with plaques and the JSL gifted the Brevard Museum with $2,000
for the development of on-site nature trails.
The Sustaining Committee was formed, members took a slide presentation
about the Brevard Museum into the schools reaching 18,000 students, and the
Bundles Coffees were continued. Mrs.
Robert Kenaston (Janet) stepped into complete the busy 1972-'73 presidential
year in Mrs. Hinkhouse's absence.

Sustainers; Community service

1973-'74
Mrs. J.S.
Collner (Barbara) became president in April '73 and under her guidance the
League held a series of membership cocktail parties for the benefit of the
Brevard Museum; the highly successful "Great Beginnings" event raised
over $6,000 for the Museum. We also
joined the South Brevard League for Christmas brunch, invited Attorney General
Robert Shevin to speak before the public at an evening meeting, placed the
Suitcase Exhibits at the Brevard Museum for expanded use by the community,
published a Placement Guide, revised the Board Manual and completed a Junior
Service League Information Brochure.

1974-'75
Mrs. Nelson
Wirman (Ruthan) took over the leadership at the annual luncheon and lead us
through "Great Beginnings Revisited" ($1,720) and our First Annual
Charity Tennis Tournament. We
joined the South Brevard League for Christmas brunch, began reorganization of
our Professional Membership, took on Learning Disabilities as another League

($1,350). The South Brevard League
was invited for Christmas brunch; the Brevard Museum was formally presented with
the refitted Suitcase Museums for on -site lecture programs and was gifted with
a League check of $1,500. The
End-Of-The-Year-Social was started for Service League couples and the Wind

given to the Brevard Arts Council ($295), the Bicentennial Time Capsule ($25)
and the Brevard Museum ($3,000). The
Service League donated its services to the Museum by organizing a series of
membership coffees and enlisting close to 200 charter members for the newly
formed Brevard Museum Guild. In the
fundraising area, the second Old Fashioned Lawn Party raised $1,275.62 for the
Community Trust Account.
1977-'78
Mrs. Thomas
Williams (Gayle) took office in April and the Service League took steps to
increase its members by admitting two Provisional classes.
Another step was taken on the Yellow Brick Road project, where in JSL
members acted as volunteer screening teams to identify learning disabilities in
preschoolers.
The Hacienda-Hospitality Fundraiser added $2,000 and the Sustainers'
Christmas Tree Project netted $900. The
Professionals planned and manned a Crafts Day at the Brevard Museum in the Fall.
The JSL's Tenth Anniversary of Incorporation was celebrated at a
Champagne Brunch on October 6th. JSL
members hosted the Brevard Museum's Smithsonian Preview Party and donated $6,000
to the Museum during its January Grand Opening (bringing to $20,000 the total

Professional League members who are serving as the project directors.
Completing work begun last year on behalf of Psychiatric Half-Way House
